On Friday, the Red Lions opened their Belfius EuroHockey Championship campaign in style. He scored the opening goal of a final five, from a penalty corner, the third for Belgium.
"We could not have wished for a better start. Spain is a difficult and challenging team to play against, but we master the game plan well. I thought I had scored from the first penalty corner but an amazing save by the Spanish keeper kept my shoot out. We had to wait until the third penalty corner before we could open the score sheet."
Shortly after that Wegnez added a goal, however Belgium had to wait until the final part of the match to add to their goal tally. "In Q3 we had less impact but we made our mark in the last quarter: the 5-0 was a great final result."
Hendrickx was impressed with the support in the venue. "The crowd were completely behind us, being able to play with such a backdrop is an amazing experience. It is great to see that Belgians can lift the roof for hockey."
Next up the Red Lions take on England: "We have taken a strong first step. This match will boost us for the rest of the tournament but we know Sunday will be a tough and physical match. What is important now is that we rest and recover fully tomorrow."
